Bandung — Pregnant women are a group that is often underestimated in terms of physical activity, even though the demands of pregnancy are substantial. However, a community event titled Maternity Fun Walk, which was initiated by Momiasi, showed a different narrative. Pregnant mothers in the city participated in a series of light walks accompanied by a special guide or “bumil” companion, with the aim of making exercise during pregnancy feel more comfortable and more confident.
The activity was held as part of Momiasi's commitment to being a friend for women, not merely an information provider. According to the organizers, the main message of the event was that a pregnancy does not have to be a period of rest and silence. A woman can still move, socialize, and maintain her routine, as long as the type and intensity of the exercise are adjusted to her gestational age and physical condition.
Berjalan Ringan, Bukan Kompetisi
Unlike a race or a fun walk that starts from a start line, the Maternity Fun Walk was designed without a strict target distance or finish time. Participants walked in groups accompanied by a companion or “bumil” companion, making the atmosphere more like a leisurely stroll than a sporting event.
Some of the sessions consisted of warm-ups, stretching, and breathing exercises, followed by a walk along a route that was deliberately selected to be flat and safe. The organizers explained that the selection of the route was not arbitrary. For expectant mothers, the risk of slipping or tripping is one of the things that often becomes a reason to avoid outdoor activities altogether.
Several participants admitted that they had joined because they were looking for a reason to get moving again. The presence of a companion made them feel more secure, so they did not have to worry about walking alone.
From a health perspective, light-to-moderate exercise during pregnancy is widely understood to support circulation, help control weight gain, reduce discomfort in the lower back, and improve sleep quality. However, this does not mean that exercise can be carried out arbitrarily. Every stage of pregnancy has different limits, so consultation with a doctor or midwife is still the primary step before starting any new physical routine.
“Olahraga pada ibu hamil bukan soalheer是不够, melainkan soal konsistensi. Yang paling penting adalahammer adjusted to the conditions of each trimester, and that there is someone who accompanies and monitors.”
That principle also became the basis of the event's approach. Instead of pushing participants to a certain standard, the companion's role was to observe the participants' condition, remind them to hydrate, and make sure that no one was forced to continue when their body signaled fatigue.
A Small Event with a Larger Meaning
Although it was held on a weekend, the Maternity Fun Walk attracted attention because it touched on a fairly fundamental issue: the psychological condition of expectant mothers. Many women feel that their “freedom” ends once pregnancy is confirmed. They tend to reduce their activities out of fear, worry about the fetus, or because of the assumption that the safest choice is to do nothing at all.
This kind of assumption is actually unnecessary. Fatigue, especially in the first trimester, is a natural condition that can be different from laziness or unwillingness to move. However, once physical complaints have been identified and properly handled, light activities such as walking, swimming, or pregnancy yoga are generally considered safe.
The presence of Momiasi as a companion also opens up another dimension: the need for a support group. Expectant mothers often have many questions about nutrition, signs of danger during pregnancy, or how to prepare for the postpartum period, but not all of those questions can be answered from an online search. A gathering like this functions as a space where experiences can be shared, and where participants can remind one another that they are going through something similar.
The fun walk format itself is not new, and many cities have similar activities. The distinguishing element here lies in the segmentation of the participants and the presence of a companion. A regular fun walk usually optimizes for distance and speed, whereas this event optimized for comfort and togetherness. In a sense, this reflects a change in the approach of community activities, which are beginning to pay more attention to groups with different needs rather than only targeting a single standard.
For the expectant mothers of Bandung who participated, the event offered something simple yet valuable: the reassurance that they could still be active. The organizers stated that the commitment to accompany women like a friend will continue, and that similar activities will be held again in the future. Whether the number of participants will increase is still unknown, but at least in this event, being pregnant did not become a reason to stop moving.
